NEW YORK - "Vanities," Jack Heifner's tale of three young women and how they grew up, was one of the biggest off-Broadway success stories of the 1970s. Now a musical based on the long-running comedy is bound for Broadway.
This fall, "Vanities, a New Musical," directed by Judith Ivey, opens at a theatre to be announced.
Heifner has adapted his play for the musical stage and the score is by David Kirshenbaum. Dan Knechtges will provide the choreography. The musical plays an out-of-town engagement at California's Pasadena Playhouse, Aug. 22-Sept. 28 before coming to New York.
Heading the cast - and playing three best friends who go from high school cheerleaders to adulthood - are Lauren Kennedy, Sarah Stiles and Anneliese van der Pol.
Kennedy was seen on Broadway in "Monty Python's Spamalot," Stiles is a veteran of both "Avenue Q" and "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" and van der Pol was the last Belle in the Broadway company of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast."
"Vanities, a New Musical" had its world premiere at TheatreWorks in Palo Alto, Calif., in 2006.

Mariah Carey and new husband Nick Cannon have fueled rumors they’re set to start a family — after reports surfaced the couple are planning a nursery.
According to the New York Daily News newspaper, Carey’s assistant called Los Angeles’ exclusive Petit Tresor baby boutique to talk about preparing for a new addition.
A source said that the assistant asked the store if they could send fabric samples and if its designers could work with the theme of butterflies. They’re now sending the diva pictures of the nursery they just finished for Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony’s twins.
SPIDER-MAN star WILLEM DAFOE was expelled from school as a teenager for shooting graphic profiles of his fellow students.
The wannabe filmmaker was known for his controversial hobby but when one teacher found unedited footage in a school editing room, Dafoe was in trouble.
He says, "I had stepped out of the editing room one day and someone found my material, not yet edited, and there was some rough stuff there.
"I got expelled from school for that film, so it wasn't exactly an auspicious debut."
AMY WINEHOUSE's former manager would rather the troubled star beat her alleged drug addiction before releasing another record.
Pop supremo Nick Godwyn signed Winehouse to 19 Management when she was just 16.
And Godwyn thinks it is time for the Rehab hitmaker to have a career break, so she can concentrate on her personal life.
He says, "What is happening now is not very pleasant for anybody to watch. I feel she seems to be sad.
"People talk about wasted talent, but I don't look at it like that. If Amy never made another record again it would be sad, but it's less about the music for me and more about, 'this is a human being that maybe isn't very happy'."
And Godwyn believes the 24-year-old has always lived an unhappy life.
He adds, "There were signs, even back then, that she wasn't happy.
"You can listen to the words of her songs and there aren't many happy, upbeat love songs.
"And I think that's a reflection of where she is. She only writes songs from personal experience.
"There are some beautiful songs which, lyrically, are fascinating. But some of them are quite sad."
